Night Place is a series of portrait photographs taken at rural gas stations at night across the United States. For this work, I am interested in the history of an on-the-road style of fine art documentary photo making. I am choosing the gas station because it is a quintessential icon of on-the-road American storytelling. My idea in making these images is to turn the camera away from the gas station itself to remove its documentary context, yet use the lighting that the gas station provides, to give the viewer a sense of a place that anyone has ever been to, yet a place that is completely unknown.
